Camp Kiwanilong - 2014-2015

Every year the fifth grade goes on an over-nighter to Camp Kiwanilong. They have adventures, and dissect dead squid, and sit around the campfire, and tell scary stories in the dark cabins, and take night walks, and go to the beach, and do so much fun stuff . . .

Marshmallow Challenge

The Marshmallow Challenge is a remarkably fun and instructive design exercise that encourages teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity. The task is simple: in eighteen minutes, teams must build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow needs to be on top.

See what some fourth graders can do:

Summer is on the Way!

Sylvia

FYI: The testing is going smoothly.

All the third, fourth and fifth grade classes are taking their state tests and doing an excellent job in the computer lab.

THANK YOU to all of you. . .  students and teachers. AND thank you to all the Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes for being patient. I hope to have some fun times before the end of the year.

Next school year, I hope to have the PortaPortal re-arranged. I will have a special link for the Kindergarten and First grade classes to go to their own PortaPortal link page.  I think the number of links, as it is now, is too overwhelming for the little kids. I want to have pages for them to go to, also, so that they can read things about what they are playing.

Anyway . . . if you have any ideas, let me know.

How to Save ClipArt and Upload a Folder to Your Google Drive

I wanted to show you how to save pictures, from a Google search, to a folder in your Google Drive.
I practiced several methods to see which would work best. I found that it is best to save to the Documents Folder on your computer's hard drive. THEN upload that folder to your Google Drive.

Watch the video to see how that is done:

*********************************************************

********************************************************
Here are the instructions for adding your picture, from your drive, to your BLOG.  Adding to a slide show or a document is a little different with instructions below these directions.
  • Have your picture folder open.
  • Hold down the <Control> key and click on the picture.
  • Select "Copy Image" from the drop down menu.
  • Return to your blog post.
  • Paste and adjust your picture as needed.

If you wish to put your picture into a slide show OR a document . . . use the  "Insert" option from your menu bar. There you will find the choice of taking an image from YOUR Google Drive. There you can open your image folders and select them to add them.

Asteroid with Tiny Moon . . . and more of Space too . . .

Asteroid 2004 BL86 came within  745,000 miles of the Earth on Tuesday, January 26. That is actually pretty close! Our moon is 238,900 miles from the Earth.

The images, captured by NASA, show a small moon, approximately 230 feet (70 meters) across. The asteroid is approximately 1,100 feet (325 meters) across.

There are 20 images in this .gif movie.

The Oregon Trail

Ask your parents if they remember the old Oregon Trail game. It was always so much fun even if you never finished. I remember that the boys always loved to go hunting. Well, the last time I played, I ran out of food so I had to hunt and I did pretty well.

Here, I have embedded the game for your enjoyment.  Teachers like this game because you have to do math, and read, and think. . . Try to make it to Oregon with most of your people and a little money to spend. Click on the above link to play.

Try the Delux version of the Oregon Trail ( https://archive.org/details/msdos_Oregon_Trail_Deluxe_The_1992 ) You may have to turn off your arrow to play the game - You will see that option in the upper left hand corner - then to get back you will need to press the [esc] key.

Creating a Presentation

A presentation is a slide show. It can be shared with an overhead to view and speak about in a group meeting or it can be shared online.

Here is a video tutorial to show you how to begin to make a simple presentation:

Creating Your Own Blog

When you are creating a blog, you want to have a basic plan. Do you want a blog to share with the community? What do you want people to see? Do you want to have a private blog, such as a journal?

Blogs are fun. I have several blogs which I use to share information with others. I have a poem blog. I also have a music blog and a family history blog. Of course, you are all aware of the blog which you are reading right now.

I would like to teach you how to make your own blog. You will use it like a private journal. You can add links, pages, pictures and writings.

Let's get started!
Log in to your Google account. Then follow these step by step directions. DON'T miss a step. Look for circled red items and click in the order given.

After logging in:

Then:

Find the "New Blog" button and then click:

Here is where your planning comes in . . . You need to have a title, an address and a template added before you can create your blog. Make sure you check your spelling for a nice title. Do the best you can for your address, but realize that some addresses you can't have. Certain marks are not allowed and some addresses are already being used. You will get a notice if you can't use an address so keep trying. Pick a template (design) that you think you might like and then click the "create blog" button.  You can change your template later.

After clicking "Create" this is what you see. A list of your blogs:

Clicking on the button for #1 will take you to a new "posting"
Clicking on the button for #2 will give you a new "Page"
Clicking on the button for #3 will give you the view of your "blog"
Clicking on the TITLE of your blog will take you to the "dashboard"

Click on the Title of your blog to get started.

**********************************************************

DASHBOARD and SETTINGS

Take a few moments to look over your blog's dashboard. This is the control center for all your tools, settings and access to your own personal blog. Then click on the "settings" button on the left side and follow the directions as given below.

1. Click on the button for edit "Privacy." (the blue words)
2. Click "No" for both questions.
3. Click the orange button to "Save changes."

Click on the Blog Readers edit button (blue words)
Click on the button for (#1) "Private." Only blog authors (that is YOU)
Click on (#2) the orange button to save your settings.

Click to learn about Embedding a video into your blog .
